Description:

http://www.ted.com In this soaring demonstration, deaf percussionist Evelyn Glennie leads the audience through an exploration of music not as notes on a page, but as an expression of the human experience. Playing with sensitivity and nuance informed by a soul-deep understanding of and connection to music, she talks about a music that is more than sound waves perceived by the human ear. She illustrates a richer picture that begins with listening to yourself, and includes emotion and intent as well as the complex role of physical spaces -- instrument, concert hall and even the bones and body cavities of musician and listener alike.

She isn't completely deaf. She can hear people speaking very faintly (but has to lip-read) and can hear a telephone ringing as a sort of crackling sound.

she also did not go deaf until she was 12, the language was already there and the ability to speak had already been learned, all she had to do was maintain it.

She is profoundly deaf this does not mean that she cant hear anything at all,...... put it this way i had a short conversation with her a couple of days ago....to greater understand her hearing (which is actually pretty irrelavent as she is an UNBELIEVABLE musician) go to her website and read her hearing essay it cleans it up

How is it messy? Messy, meaning not totally structured and almost improvised, like jazz?
