Holy Week in Spain Spain is renowned in the world for its Holy Week traditions. Seville, Malaga, and San Fernando in Cadiz see the most glamorous celebrations, while those of Castille-Leon see the more sombre and solemn events. A common feature in Spain is the almost general usage of the "nazareno" or penitential robe for some of the participants in the Processions. This garment consists in a tunic, a hood with conical tip ( "capirote") used to conceal the face of the wearer, and sometimes a cloak. The exact colors and forms of these robes depend on the particular procession. The robes were widely used in the medieval period for penitents, who could demonstrate their penance while still masking their identity. (These robes intentionally served as the basis for the traditional uniform for members of the Ku Klux Klan in the United States, ironically a very anti-Catholic organization.) These "Nazarenos" carry processional candles or rough hewn wooden crosses, may walk the city streets barefoot, and, in some places may carry shackles and chains on their feet as penance. In some areas, sections of the participant wear dress freely inspired in the uniforms of the Roman Legion[1]. Son identificados en la mayoría de los casos por sus vestiduras, va ataviado de capirote o capuz, túnica y capa (cada región posee su propio nombre significando lo mismo), distinguiéndose de una cofradía o hermandad a otra por diversas características, ya sea el color, emblema que identifica a cada grupo, aunque no se da en todos los casos, hay quien va vestido de traje y forma parte de la comitiva. En ocasiones, la capa es sustituida en algunas hermandades por una cola, que suele ser recogida en un cíngulo o en un cinturón de esparto, para que no arrastre. La forma cónica de los capirotes de los nazarenos evoca un acercamiento del penitente al cielo, interpretado por muchos cristianos como lugar de salvación. Este valor simbólico es análogo al que tienen los cipreses, árboles de copa puntiaguda, en los cementerios cristianos, que acercan al difunto al cielo, lugar en el que según algunas creencias se desarrolla la vida tras la muerte. Aunque pueden incorporarse a las filas miembros de todas las edades, algunas hermandades tenían por norma hasta hace pocos años el hecho de que los nazarenos sólo podían pertenecer al género masculino, hace relativamente pocos años, varias han permitido el desfile de mujeres bajo la túnica y el capirote, también es sabido que al ser anónimo quien representa al nazareno en la mayoría de las cofradías, desde siempre se ha oído el comentario curioso de eso es una mujer. Entre los mismos nazarenos también existen diferencias, algunos van descalzos haciendo así más dura su penitencia, otros portan cruces, están los que llevan diversos elementos representativos de la hermandad, objetos musicales, purificadores...
