Description:

Here is a high quality version of the now famous "Shawn Lane, Steve Vai, Paul Gilbert, Joe Satriani, Andy Timmons, Reb Beach, Alex Skolnick" Ibanez Jam that took place at NAMM on Saturday the 16th January 1993. As far as i remember this was video'd by Mike Varney (or maybe his brother Mark??), he borrowed someones camera who was there with him. A really low quality version of this Jam was first posted on the net about 2 years ago, so i have just ripped this much improved full quality version from DVD. When i ripped this version, i included the warmup at the start before they begin the song (which the other, low quality version doesn't have), but to fit this within the 10 minute time frame of Youtube videos (on a free account), i had to miss about the last 1 minute of "thank you's" off the end. Edit : Since this video had finished uploading and converting to the Youtube format here, i have compared it with the original high quality version that i ripped from DVD, and it seems this video has lost a lot of quality in the process of uploading to Youtube.... so i have uploaded my full quality version of this video here : http://www.megaupload.com/?d=EQ1DV82A .... so you should be able to download the video from that link without a loss in quality. Also, here is an amazing recording that is from this same show, of Shawn Lane and Paul Gilbert playing "Let it Be" (right before they all got onstage for this NAMM Jam "Going Down" video). Paul plays the first solo at 2:12, then at 4:00 Shawn sets the sky alight with the most beautiful, unearthly extended solo!! Then as the song ends Shawn plays the most ridiculous scary run! :-0 http://www.speedyshare.com/523113984.html Enjoy!

lane's solo was very technical indeed but guitar playing isn't all about speed, SRV could've soloed next to lane and still rock

I don't understand all this implying that all Shawn's playing was about was "speed" alone.... it's about his note choice, the unique rhythmic groupings he played, the sublime tasty phrasing, and vibrato etc.... the list goes on. Just because he may play some stuff faster than other guys, and they 'may or may not' play a slow solo, doesn't always automatically mean the "slower" playing is "better".

Many people were blown away by Shawn's speed alone. I was more amazed by the arrangement of notes in the midst of all that speed. Wow! It would still be the most impressive even if it was slowed down.

While everyone else raves about how "great" Shawn Lane is, I'm just going to point out that Alex has one killer guitar

I can answer the "why is Gilbert using a lefty?" question. I met him at a clinic right after this and he said that since he was jammin with so many bad ass guitarist he wanted to do something original. If you watch it looks like hes playing with his teeth but in actuality he is singing in the pickup. Anyway I thought it was a great story.

-awhile I dont love any of the solos on this jam, one thing that I do find special is the fact that the only guy on this night with his own voice was indeed shawn... not that vai doesnt have his own voice... but, that it was hard to tell who was playing... between reb beach and alex s. I didnt even know WHO was soloing, if not for the video.
