TGarzarel ::: Favorites I'm learning this piece now, and liked his energy and the temperment he brought out in the music. While many versions I hear from younger pianists are played much cleaner and more virtuistically, they tend to be too mechanical and bland. I agree there were some points in this performance that were rushed and blurred out, but overall I liked it. 07-07-15 01:10:21 _____________________________________________________
LVB1770 ::: Favorites TGarzarel, One of my favorite performances of this piece is by John Bell Young. Search you tube for John Bell Young Mephisto Waltz. His playing is very much of the old school Liszt style. Very unique, interesting and exciting. I love his Scriabin too! 07-07-15 16:27:29 _____________________________________________________
filthysoap ::: Favorites he is very passionate player! especially in rach 2 07-07-15 16:45:57 _____________________________________________________
filthysoap ::: Favorites but i do think performing this kind of music in a church is somewhat unappripriate 07-07-15 16:48:59 _____________________________________________________
LVB1770 ::: Favorites filthysoap, Like the Catholic Church is free from sin?(NOT!) They just paid out $660 Million for sexual abuse cases today and dating back over decades billions of dollars to victims. Are any of those priests doing time? Probably not. They are probably still with the church. Hmmm, what's wrong with this picture? I think an Artist should be mostly free to play what he wants, where he wants. Liszt's music will not offend God! 07-07-17 03:15:07 _____________________________________________________
rvbarnesboy ::: Favorites I first heard of Jena Jando on his enormous catalogue on the Naxos label. One of the best budget CD labels. This man can do it ALL. His Beethoven is wonderful, and his the transcendental etudes are breath=taking. the church setting works for this kind of divine talent. 07-07-24 00:01:44 _____________________________________________________
LVB1770 ::: Favorites Thanks rvbarnesboy, nice to hear a positive response. 07-07-24 02:01:06 _____________________________________________________
paolohudson ::: Favorites The Mephisto Liszt is referring to in this piece isn't the devil. Actually, contrary to popular belief, Mephisto in the German legend is not the devil, but one of the devil's little demons. He is more closely associated with the kind of mischievous spirit of Puck from A Midsummer's Night's Dream. Liszt wrote this piece intending it to be a programmatic piece describing the scene in the inn from Lenau's Faust (a poem). 07-07-26 00:06:13 _____________________________________________________
LVB1770 ::: Favorites Very interesting paolohudson! 07-07-26 11:57:49 _____________________________________________________
paolohudson ::: Favorites What I find fascinating about this piece is truly the genius of Liszt. In the scene in the poem, Faust and Mephisto are coming into the inn and discover a bridal party. Mephisto tunes his violin (explaining the progression of fifths and fourths in the opening segment) and begins a little song. Faust later woos the bride and makes love to her (the first theme represents Mephisto, the second, quieter one represents Faust wooing the woman, at least that's how I see it). 07-07-27 13:49:41 _____________________________________________________ |
