i'm going to have disagree with 1MrBigShot1, i've seen some so called "techs" and "mastertechs" walk in the shop with all there ASE's and all these fancy expensive MAC,Snapon,Cornwell, tools and endup doing more damage than good, keep in mind that the door swings both ways.being a good machanic is one of those things. ether you got it or you don't. anyone can study a book and pass a test, but not everyone can pickup a wrench and fix a car.

Hmm, I'm not ASE and never had any formal schooling on automotive and find that I am far better than most of the ASE master mechanics I've run across. If you have the knack to do it school won't help like hands on will. I emphasize most, as in not all.

You have to remember in thoses days (1950-70) cars were sold and often junked at 60,000 miles.. It's not uncommon for me to work on cars with over 120,000+ The only thing going on today is the EPA is messing with our car engine oil and the work around for this is Diesel oil.. New cars have roller lifters and roller rockers.. So using todays engine oil in a flat tappet cam engine is.. cause for serious death.. Les

I'm rather disgusted with new cars. The complexity in today's cars often prevents one from being able to work on them on their own. They often require their own specialized set of tools that cost lots of money. The newest designs are now going for full integration; if your wiring harness goes out, you have to replace virtually everything. Keeps your money going to the car companies... I'm much more fond of simpler, older cars from the 1950s-1970s as a result.

Myself being a Master ASe tech for the past 20 years, totally disagree with "school not being the best way sometimes to go". I see so many "so called mechanic's" in the repair field who think they know everything, yet, have no idea how to read a wiring diagram. Ask yourself this question, "would you have a doctor perform surgery on you, who has never had 5 minutes of schooling?, or a doctor who learned how to operate by learning as you go"?

A very good explanation! I too rather perfer the "hands on". But its true though! Cars today are getting more advanced with computers and jobs today perfer documentated experience wether educated or work history. It looks like I have to take the classes. Im not sure if employers are looking for desk jockies for their garages. I worked for dealerships doing the parts counter, but I sure as hell wished I started early doing the passion I love which is wrenching on cars!...

Seem's to me that you're having more fun with computers and the graphics with this video. Maybe a career change is in order.I don't like new cars that they keep coming out with new features like I saw an ad the other day for windshield wipers that spray heated water or GPS devices, it just keeps going on and on with the list of things that they keep coming out with on new cars.
