Description: An experiment performed in my chemistry class with a solution of Sodium Acetate. Mr. Allen was nice enough to let us record this. |

Forlo12345 ::: Favorites You don't have to go out and buy sodium acetate. You can make it yourself. Here's how you do it: (1) Take sodium hydroxide or sodium bicarbonate (AKA Baking Soda). (2) mix it in with vinegar (which is called acetic acid). (3) This produces water, carbon dioxide, and sodium acetate. (4) then boil all the water away, and you should get a crusty white solid after that; that is your sodium acetate. 07-10-01 02:47:04 __________________________________________________
Forlo12345 ::: Favorites As far as preparing the supersaturated solution is concerned, I'm not sure. I'd have to look up the solubility of sodium acetate in water as a function of temperature, so that way, I can increase the temperature to make the solid more soluble, then cool it down to make it supersaturated, but that process is more complicated than it sounds. 07-10-01 02:41:54 __________________________________________________
Forlo12345 ::: Favorites Sodium acetate is an ionic compound, so it is a form of salt. And you could do this with table salt, sodium chloride. You have to prepare a supersaturated solution, which means that the liquid contains more sodium acetate than the maximum amount that it can hold. All you need is a small sample of DRY, SOLID sodium acetate, then pour the supersaturated solution on the solid. This will cause a precipitation to occur: the sodium acetate in solution will form a solid. 07-10-01 02:40:51 __________________________________________________
lilcrazyaznboy ::: Favorites Hey... Nice experiment.. Can you explain what is sodium acetate???.. Is it like salt?? Can i do this with salt???.. Yes or no.. Good video man. 07-09-30 17:58:19 __________________________________________________
lilcrazyaznboy ::: Favorites Where can i get sodium acetate???.. And what is it??? Is it salt???. Can i do this experiment with salt??? This is cool... 07-09-30 17:57:15 __________________________________________________
Forlo12345 ::: Favorites Yeah, I'll probably do it one day. I might not like the taste though. 07-09-30 06:34:41 __________________________________________________

Forlo12345 ::: Favorites nope, acetate is a conjugate base of acetic acid. Acetate isn't acidic at all, it is basic, so it should taste bitter. So, really, it shouldn't burn you if you got acetate on your hand or if you tasted it. And watching this video is tempting me to make some weird design with sodium acetate and then eat it! 07-09-27 03:18:09 __________________________________________________
agentisthebest ::: Favorites something tells me that acetate is gonna be much more acidic than vinigar n is gonna burn you lol 07-09-26 07:15:22 __________________________________________________
Forlo12345 ::: Favorites Yes, because sodium is sodium (found in table salt, so it is safe to eat) and acetate is a conjugate base of acetic acid (in other words: vinegar). So really, it should be safe enough to eat, but don't take my word for it. It might taste a little bitter if you did eat it. 07-09-26 07:10:55 __________________________________________________ |
