How can png replace gif when it can't do animation? Please don't tell me Flash it is relatively slow to gif and isn't as cross-platform.

It replaces .gif in the sense that it can do transparency. Thus you can use a transparent layer as the background. and just an unrelated FYI, Flash IS cross-platform.

I use JPEG primarily for screenshots since it is easier to control the size. PNG can vary from 100KB to several MB on the same sized image depending on the detail on screen. For other images I also use JPEG as my camera outputs in low-compressed JPEG (about 2-3MB for each 6MP image).

I really wish there was another format that we could save images as. .jpg and .gif are great, if you want to upload it quickly, and have it downloaded quickly, but unfortunately, you sacrifice quality. Then you have .png, where you get awesome, un-compressed quality, but it comes with a price - it takes up more space. As a graphics artist, I generally prefer .png, just because the quality is better, but when uploading large images, I have to compromise, and save it as a high quality .jpg
