Description:

A group of high school students in a small Connecticut town wanted to perform a play telling the stories of actual soldiers in Iraq. But their school said no, afraid it might offend members of their community. Although the students were silenced on their own stage in Wilton, Conn., they were given another -- Off Broadway in New York City.

At the end the soldier handed the student who was playing him something... He said something like "I wore this one in Iraq and I wanted to give it to you" What is "It"?

It's a theatrical device used because the play is staged as if it were in a high school assembly where the students are learning about the soldiers stories. A sort of play within a play. All of the actors have their lines memorized though, of course.

It's also not unheard of that the very first time a play is mounted they have a staged reading with scripts in hand. A lot of plays that "made it big" have had the same stage readings coming out of the gate. Thanks for posting this. As for the principal: I wonder if he had been around during the Civil War would he be as reactionary to the staging of soldier letters as they were in Ken Burns' brilliant Civil War documentary. Would he worry about these "imaginary people" of his being offended?

This was actually their fifth performance this month, with one more this Friday. The use was intentional. voicesinconflict (dot) com

These kids are the true American patriots. I hope and pray that their show gets a national stage and goes on tour so we can all see it. Isn't it amazing that young kids are always the ones at the forefront of truth.
